The serial number will be an 8 digit number impressed into the back of the headstock with “MADE IN USA” below. RRR is the factory ranking/plant designation number. Prior to 1984 when the Kalamazoo, MI factory was closed, the numbers 001-499 indicated Kalamazoo production.
The serial number of an acoustic is located on the label inside the sound hole of the guitar. All acoustic serial numbers begin with the letter “A”, and are followed by the two digit year prefix. The remaining digits indicate the sequential number of acoustics built to date.
They are fantastic guitars. I prefer the American to the Tributes, but the Tributes are quite a bit better then my MIM Tele. What type of sound are you going for, G&L has a pretty big Tribute range currently. The Semi Hollow bodies tend to be the best bang for your buck on the Tributes…
(It was named this way because the headstock only read Fender.) The name Telecaster came a little bit later and wasn’t Leo Fender’s idea. It was a man who worked for Fender named Don Randall who suggested it, coining the word by merging “television” with “broadcaster”.
If you really like Fender style guitars that come with good quality innovative hardware, then G&L guitars fit the bill nicely. Some people place G&L guitars on a pedestal loving they way they play and sound, while others prefer the traditional look and sound of their Fender predecessors.
Although a serial number is helpful for roughly determining the age of a guitar, this is often not the exact date. As a result of the overlap between years, Fender serial numbers are also not by definition chronological. In the past (we are talking about before 1976) the serial numbers were often randomly assigned.
